CHECK OUT THE REMARKABLE FOOTBALL RECORDS SET THIS YEAR

This year has been momentous and remarkable in the football world to say the least.

We have all seen new records and stats set by different football stars, including Real Madrid ace Cristiano Ronaldo and his Barcelona arch-rival Lionel Messi.

The number of football records the two players hold is staggering; their goal-scoring feats and the figures produced belong to a different era.


1. Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to reach 100 European goals - the prolific Portuguese netted twice against Bayern Munich to reach a century of European goals.

2. David De Gea of Manchester United became the only goal keeper to make the most saves(14) in a Premier League game.

The Spanish Number 1 recorded this achievement in Manchester United's 3-1 victory against Arsenal.

3. Real Madrid became the first team in Champions League era to win the Champions League title in consecutive years.

The Los Blancos broke this record when they defeated Italian side Juventus 3-1 in the final in Cardiff.

4. Cristiano Ronaldo became first player to hit 100 Champions League goals, having broken the European goals record against Bayern Muniuch a week earlier.

Ronaldo scored again in the return leg to become the first player to score 100 Champions League goal.

5. Neymar became the World's most expensive footballer when he moved from Barcelona to PSG for a staggering £200 million, breaking Paul Pogba's £89 million record move to Manchester United from Serie A giants Juventus.

6. Manchester City became the first English team in history to win 16 consecutive games, it has never been done in any tier of English football.

They achieved this when they defeated Tottenham 4-1 at the Etihad.

7. Lionel Messi matched Gerd Muller's long-standing record for scoring the most goals for one club in the top five European leagues.

Muller scored 525 goals in 572 appearances for Bayern Munich between 1965 and 1979, a record which had remained untouched for nearly 40 years.

8. Real Madrid became the first team to successfully defend the FIFA World Club Cup, when they defeated Gremio by 1-0 in Abu Dhabi.

9. Cristiano Ronaldo became the only man to have scored in three Champions League finals when he scored against Juventus in the Final of the 2017 Champions League against Juve.

The Portuguese has in previous years scored in Final for Manchester United in 2008 and Real Madrid in 2014.

10. Zinedine Zidane became the first manager in Champions League history to win the Champions League back to back.
