It’s hard to say that this year’s edition of the Africa Movie Academy Awards is highly anticipated, because to be honest, it’s not. And to say that it’s the biggest night in the African movie industry is equally very very debatable. So we’ll leave out all that designing and cut right to it.
Today, the 13th Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) will hold at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos and maybe some of Nollywood’s biggest acts will gather as blockbusters movies and movie makers that stole the scene in 2016 will be awarded.
The successful flow of award shows are largely unpredictable and with the AMAAs, logistics and technical issues have become a norm but because we hope for a better show this year, here are five things to generally expect at the AMAAs tonight:
A seamless show: We are optimistic that tonight’s show will run without the conspicuous glitches that have marred previous editions. We pointed out poor progression and mid-show power outagesin this article but also noted that these issues may not arise since the event is holding in Lagos this time and for good reason. Lagos is the entertainment hub of Africa and has potential to carry the burden of events such as this. Also, the Lagos state government is fully involved and for the sake of its own reputation, we expect it has put all in place to ensure a night worthy of applause and great reviews.
Nse Ikpe-Etim will be hosting?:Nollywood’s quality actress, Nse Ikpe-Etim was announced as host from the get-go from the show has been postponed so many times we’re no longer sure if she’s still signed on for the role. And if her Instagram page is something to go by, we don’t see her creating any buzz or prepping her fans for her outing tonight. The last time the AMAAwards Instagram page flaunted her as host was 23rd May and the event has been shifted not less than twice afterwards so who will be hosting tonight? We honestly hope to see Nse.
No! Your favourite movie stars will not be attending: If you know of AMAA in its recent years, you’ll know it has lost relevance among the crop of New Nollywood artistes. We even dedicated an article to why these industry players are ignoring AMAA and another indicator of what the turn up will look like lies in the photos from the nominees party that held in Kigali, Rwanda weeks ago. We could almost describe as a veteran event so tonight may not be any different.
’76 will win big: It landed eight nominations and although it has somewhat found its way out of our collective stream of consciousness, thanks to a number of other fantastic movies that have been released after it, we expect it to rise and shine again tonight.
Red carpet glitterati: We’re not looking forward to massive glam like we usually do for the AMVCAs but we hope to see some of the stars who attend strut the red carpet in drool-worthy fashion pieces. If we do get disappointed, then it won’t come as a shock too. But our fingers are tightly crossed.
